Several citizens at Crawford Market and adjoining Mohammed Ali Road area are miffed with
milk distributors charging more than the MRP and will be approaching the milk-producing
companies to make them aware of the problem. They have also registered complaints with
‘Jaago Grahak Jaago’, a consumer complaint forum as well as with the ministry of date and
measurement dept. Previously, the vendors were said to charge Rs.1 extra on one litre
pouches but, according to sources, several vendors are making a profit of more than
Rs.3 per pouch in the said areas.
Upon inquiry, a few vendors claimed that the milk companies have not
altered the rates on the pouches and, as they are unable make a profit
of more than Rs.1 per pouch, they are compelled to overcharge
customers.
According to Shishir Deshpande, Chairman of Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, the
overcharging is common and the magnitude is such that on every 25 lakh
pouches supplied in the city 70 per cent are overcharged.
